Lab Members
Principle Investigator (PI)
Kendall Valentine
Kendall has been all over the United States conducting research! Starting in Boston where she completed her Bachelor's in Marine Science from Boston University and her Master's in Geology and Geophysics from Boston College. She then completed her Ph.D. in Oceanography and Coastal Sciences from Louisiana State University before conducting postdoctoral research at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in the Department of Physical Sciences. Now she is on the west coast working in the Oceanography department at the University of Washington.

Kendall discovered her love of the coastal environment when she was 5 years old on a family trip to Cape Cod, MA. She recalls that she loved the stinky mud of the salt marsh and has been interested in these unique coastal environments ever since!
Research Assistant
Morgan Palmer
Morgan is an undergraduate in her Senior year, looking to complete a B.S in Oceanography and Fishery Sciences. She is interested in coastal benthic organisms and how they are affected by their changing environment.

Morgan has always been interested in the ocean and the invertebrates that inhabit its coastal environments. She remembers scoring the beaches of Hood Canal at low tide for crabs, snails, and urchins!
Graduate Student
Clara Stanbury
Clara graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2021 with a degree in Environmental Science. She then worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in geophysics and seismology for two years before starting her MS/PhD at the University of Washington with the Sediment Dynamics/Coastal Ecogeomorphology Lab. She hopes to channel her love for science communication, wading in mud, and research into her career. Beyond the classrooms and laboratories, Clara loves hiking, climbing, biking, and cooking (especially the sweet stuff).
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Meghan King
Meghan is a postdoctoral researcher jointly appointed to Oceanography and Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington. Originally from the East Coast, she obtained a BSc with a double major in Geology and Environmental Science, and a minor in Geographic Information Science. She worked as a research assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory for a year before completing both her MSc and PhD in Geology at Oregon State University. Her research has always centered on sediment transport, with a scope ranging from modern fluvial systems to ancient shallow marine basins! As part of the Coastal Ecogeomorphology Lab she is working to unravel the relationship between benthic biofilms, sediments and tidal channel complexity on mudflats in Willapa Bay, Washington.
As a field scientist, Meghan is passionate about breaking down the barriers for field participation in the geosciences. She is working to develop virtual field experiences for students who cannot attend traditional field camps or field-heavy courses.
Undergraduate Researcher
Orin Beitz
Orin is an undergraduate in their senior year, majoring in Oceanography. They are interested in the impact of vegetation vs non-vegetation on organic carbon storage in sediment.
Growing up in Arizona, Orin was always fascinated by the ocean and the coast during family trips to California, always taking handfuls of rocks back home! Outside of the lab, Orin loves knitting and baking.
Graduate Student
Kendall Fontenot
Kendall recently joined the lab as a first-year graduate student. She obtained a Bachelor's in Coastal Environmental Science and a Master's in Physical Geography & Geology from Louisiana State University in 2020 and 2022, respectively. After working for two years as a consulting geoscientist at a corporate engineering firm, she is now pursuing her PhD in Oceanography at UW.
Kendall's research interests include biogeochemical dynamics in coastal environments, modeling coastal change, and understanding impacts to such systems under current and impending climate change. She is passionate about science communication, community engagement, and research accessibility. She's an avid bookworm, dog mom, and loves Spanish wine.
